Spent my Halloween sitting in my dorm room by myself, cleaning and doing homework, feeling lonely, sorry for myself, guilty, generally depressed, mad at myself for feeling that way, and also sick. Couldn’t even muster up the energy to put my costume on.

dressed up as Michael Jackson -
complete with a Thriller-style jacket and ridiculous curly hair.
I wanted to hug him.
My father smiles,
leans on down,
and in a eerily happy voice says,
“I thought you were dead.”
The boy stared back for a moment
and then burst into tears.
